The Story of a Sail

Before it became a bag, it was a sail — shaped by wind, salt and time. When its life at sea ended, the material remained strong and full of character. Instead of discarding it, we gave it a new purpose.

We collect retired sails and carefully transform them by hand into bags for everyday use. Each piece keeps the marks, texture and history of the sail it came from, making every bag unique.

We believe good materials should last. By reusing existing sailcloth, we extend its life and reduce waste.

What once moved at sea continues on land.

The Scale of the Problem

  • Tens of thousands of sails are replaced worldwide every year

  • Modern sails are made from non-biodegradable synthetic fibres

  • Discarded sail materials can persist in the environment for 50–200+ years

  • The majority of retired sails are not recycled due to coatings and mixed materials

Reusing sails helps prevent durable material from becoming long-term pollution.

Our Impact (Per Bag – Est)

Each bag:

  • Reuses approximately 1–2 m² of sailcloth

  • Diverts 0.7–1.2 kg of synthetic material from landfill or incineration

  • ~3–6 kg CO₂ emissions avoided (compared to producing new polyester fabric)

Because production is small-scale and made to order, we avoid overproduction and excess waste.

Giving back to Kalamos

15% of all profits from this initiative will be directly reinvested in the community of Kalamos Island.

These funds will support local needs and small-scale projects that contribute to the island’s sustainability and long-term wellbeing.

Kalamos is not just where we are based — it is part of why this project exists.
