Spring into action : press release

Informing the residents about the positive progress that has occurred (winning award of 7,000€) regarding the proposal of the Episkopi Spring, Kalamos Island. We are waiting for you all, at the first open discussion that will take place on Thursday 18/5/23 at 11:00, at the primary school of Episkopi, Kalamos.*

Water is a source of life, a means of survival, a point of culture as well as a means for sustainable prosperity especially in the age of climate change. Water is a PUBLIC and SOCIAL good, as it is connected to existence itself and for this we are committed to doing everything we can to protect it and at the same time to integrate scientific knowledge and organizations in a common plan of action.

The Project "Episkopi Water Springs Revival" aims to bring back the concept of the spring, not only as a place to provide FREE water, but as a reference and meeting point for all families, passers-by and also as a central element of the local society and its heritage value, as an integral part of the island's history. Our goal is to strengthen the local cultural and natural heritage, contributing to the well-being of citizens.

Key issues to be addressed:

  • Poorly designed and maintained water tank that is breeding grounds for bacteria

  • Non-reliable access to safe drinking water

  • Plastic bottles in the surrounding area of the spring

Pelagoo is collaborating with the Municipality of Lefkada, together with four other significant partners: Ionian Enviromental Foundation (IEF), the  Department of Geology, University of Patras, the engineering consultants KMavridou, and the architectural and urban planning office Kasawoo.

Through a series of actions our plan includes:

  • Roundtable conversations with the local community and prioritisation of next steps

  • Knowledge exploitation through the cooperation with academic and technology institutes

  • Presentation of architectural designs to be chosen by residents in subsequent open discussions

  • Monitoring of the water quality in collaboration with the University of Patras

  • Sharing of the water indicators with the residents, the community and the Municipality of Lefkada

Project's desired goals:

  • Guarantee of a steady water supply throughout the year.

  • Guarantee of a stable water quality.

  • Reduction of the number of plastic bottles that are coming from the mainland.

  • Empowerment of the local community.

  • Revitalisation of the springs through a community led design process.
